ATF 2025 - Shaping the Future of Sustainable Travel and Regional Collaboration - TRAVELINDEXJohor Bahru, Malaysia, January 18, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / The ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2025, held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, marked a significant moment for the region’s tourism industry, offering a comprehensive platform for tourism professionals and stakeholders to converge, share insights, and explore new opportunities. As one of the most important events in Southeast Asia’s tourism calendar, the ATF 2025, along with the TRAVEX (Trade, Tourism, and Travel Expo), served as a dynamic marketplace for showcasing the diverse tourism products and services that the ASEAN region has to offer.

One of the central themes of the ATF 2025 was the discussion around the evolving nature of the “ASEAN Traveller of the Future.” According to experts, this new generation of travelers is increasingly driven by sustainable and experiential travel preferences. The emerging trends suggest a shift away from traditional mass tourism toward more personalized and eco-conscious experiences. Modern travelers are seeking authentic, immersive activities in off-the-beaten-path destinations that allow them to connect with local cultures, nature, and communities, while also minimizing their environmental impact. This shift in consumer behavior presents both challenges and opportunities for tourism stakeholders across the region as they work to balance growth with sustainability.

The forum also provided an opportunity to discuss the recovery and resilience of ASEAN’s tourism sector in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the region slowly emerges from the pandemic, the ATF 2025 highlighted the importance of collaboration among ASEAN member states to ensure the sustainable recovery of the tourism industry. Malaysia, as the host country for this edition of the forum, used the event to showcase Johor Bahru and other Malaysian destinations as rising stars in the region’s tourism landscape. The city, with its strategic location and vibrant cultural offerings, has quickly become an attractive destination for both regional and international travelers.

Sustainability and responsible tourism were key pillars of conversation throughout the forum. Participants emphasized the importance of addressing the challenges posed by overtourism and exploring ways to ensure sustainable development in the sector. There was a strong call for tourism businesses and governments alike to prioritize environmental conservation, community engagement, and cultural preservation as part of their growth strategies. Additionally, the event featured discussions around the role of digital technologies in promoting sustainability. Innovations in smart tourism, digital marketing, and data analytics were highlighted as tools to help optimize visitor management and create more sustainable travel experiences.

TRAVEX, which forms the business-to-business (B2B) component of the ATF, provided a vibrant networking environment for over 1,000 buyers and sellers from around the world. This trade expo was a vital hub for tourism professionals, offering a space for forging new partnerships, exploring new products, and expanding business opportunities across the ASEAN region. With representatives from destinations, hotels, airlines, and other travel service providers, TRAVEX played a crucial role in strengthening the commercial side of regional tourism and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.

One of the key takeaways from the ATF 2025 was the importance of digital transformation in the tourism sector. Sessions throughout the forum explored how technology can help enhance the overall tourist experience, improve destination marketing, and streamline the booking process. The rise of online platforms, mobile applications, and the growing role of artificial intelligence and machine learning were discussed in depth as important tools for boosting ASEAN’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.

The ATF 2025 also emphasized the need for ASEAN tourism to adapt to changing consumer expectations. With travel behavior becoming increasingly influenced by global trends, such as remote work, wellness tourism, and multi-destination trips, there is a clear need for the region to cater to these emerging demands. The forum provided a platform for participants to explore how the region’s destinations can remain attractive and competitive by diversifying their offerings and embracing new market trends.

In conclusion, the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2025 was an important milestone for the region’s tourism industry, bringing together thought leaders, industry professionals, and policymakers to discuss the future of ASEAN tourism. The event underscored the need for cooperation across borders to foster sustainable growth, with an emphasis on smart tourism, responsible travel practices, and digital transformation. As the tourism industry in ASEAN continues to recover and evolve in the post-pandemic era, the ATF 2025 reaffirmed that collaboration, innovation, and sustainability are key to shaping a successful future for the region’s tourism sector. Through events like the ATF, ASEAN demonstrates its commitment to positioning itself as a leader in sustainable and innovative tourism, ensuring that it remains a top destination for travelers around the world.

Malaysia Prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026 at ASEAN Tourism Forum 2025 https://www.zimbabwetourism.org/latest-travel-news/malaysia-prepares-for-visit-malaysia-2026-at-asean-tourism-forum-2025/3982/ Sun, 19 Jan 2025 03:53:07 +0000 https://travelcommunication.net/global-travel-news/malaysia-prepares-for-visit-malaysia-2026-at-asean-tourism-forum-2025/

Malaysia Prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026 at ASEAN Tourism Forum 2025 - TRAVELINDEXJohor Bahru, Malaysia, January 18, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / As Malaysia prepares for the launch of its Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM 2026) campaign, the country is setting ambitious targets aimed at driving growth in its tourism sector. Malaysia aims to attract 35.6 million international tourists and generate an impressive RM147.1 billion in tourism revenue. To achieve these goals, the Malaysian government has committed a substantial RM550 million to tourism promotion, which includes measures such as extending visa-free access for travelers from China and India through the end of 2026. This strategic move reflects Malaysia’s determination to enhance its appeal to international visitors and stimulate tourism growth. The country also has an intermediate goal of welcoming 27.3 million foreign tourists and generating RM102.7 billion in tourism revenue in 2024, showcasing a strong commitment to the recovery and revitalization of its tourism industry.

In parallel with these efforts, the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2025, which took place in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from January 15 to 20, provided a significant platform for industry leaders and stakeholders from across Southeast Asia to meet, discuss, and shape the future of tourism in the region. This year’s event brought together over 1,000 delegates to explore pressing issues affecting the tourism sector, with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and collaboration. The theme of the forum, “Unity in Motion: Shaping ASEAN’s Tourism Tomorrow,” captured the essence of the event, which aimed to strengthen regional cooperation and create a cohesive vision for the future of tourism in ASEAN countries.

One of the core messages emphasized during ATF 2025 was the importance of sustainability in tourism development. Malaysia used the forum as a platform to promote its tourism strategy for Visit Malaysia 2026, which highlights eco-conscious travel and the promotion of lesser-known destinations. With a growing focus on sustainability, Malaysia is working to reshape its tourism offerings by encouraging more responsible travel choices, particularly in less-explored areas of the country. This effort is seen as a way to mitigate overtourism while offering tourists more authentic experiences in smaller towns and rural locations.

Experts at the forum pointed out that tourism, if managed well, can be a powerful force for conservation and sustainable development. Justine Vaz, Executive Director of The Habitat Foundation, highlighted the importance of promoting hidden gems and lesser-known areas within Malaysia, such as small towns and rural regions. These destinations not only provide unique cultural experiences but also help to alleviate the pressure on more crowded tourist hotspots. Vaz also shared the success of her foundation’s eco-tourism initiatives, which help to preserve Malaysia’s natural heritage while benefiting local communities. According to Vaz, Habitat, which has been operating since 2016, has remained financially sustainable while contributing to conservation efforts, such as protecting park reserves from poaching.

Another critical aspect of the forum was addressing the challenges of overtourism, especially in popular destinations like Semporna in Sabah. Speakers emphasized the need to create tourism experiences that are both purpose-driven and environmentally sustainable. Cher Chua-Lassalvy, Co-founder of Batu Batu, a private island resort off the coast of Johor, shared how their resort uses sustainable practices to maintain the ecological balance of the island. This includes mapping the impact of visitor occupancy on the local flora and fauna, which helps the resort adjust its visitor numbers accordingly. By focusing on sustainability, Batu Batu has successfully positioned itself as an eco-conscious destination, catering to travelers who prioritize environmental preservation.

The importance of preserving both natural and cultural heritage was also a central theme of ATF 2025. Datuk P. Manoharan, the Director-General of Tourism Malaysia, emphasized the need to balance tourism growth with the protection of Malaysia’s diverse cultural and environmental assets. To ensure that tourism remains sustainable in the long term, Malaysia is focusing on measures such as limiting visitor numbers in ecologically sensitive areas, as well as promoting lesser-known destinations to reduce the strain on high-traffic tourist spots.

A standout feature of the ATF 2025 was the ASEAN Travel Exchange (TRAVEX), which provided an invaluable opportunity for networking among 221 sellers from ASEAN member states and 329 buyers from 41 countries. This business-to-business exchange was crucial in driving partnerships and expanding business opportunities across the region. It allowed tourism professionals to forge new connections, discuss emerging trends, and explore innovative ways to enhance the travel experience for both tourists and service providers.

Technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation, was another key topic of discussion at the forum. With the increasing reliance on digital tools to improve the travel experience, AI-driven initiatives are expected to shape the future of ASEAN tourism. AI-based solutions, such as personalized trip planning, advanced data analytics for understanding traveler behavior, and improved digital payment systems, are gaining traction as they offer more tailored and seamless travel experiences. Malaysia is positioning itself at the forefront of this digital transformation, with a focus on creating a user-friendly and efficient travel experience for visitors, from the planning phase to their arrival.

However, the rapid rise of AI also raised concerns about its impact on the industry. Noor Ahmad, CEO of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), discussed the inevitable integration of AI in tourism, particularly in replacing traditional roles such as tour guides with AI-powered devices and platforms. Despite the disruptive nature of these technologies, Ahmad argued that AI could lead to greater efficiency within the tourism sector by streamlining operations and reducing costs, particularly for lower-level tasks. At the same time, there was recognition that AI cannot replace the human touch entirely, and tourism professionals must adapt to this evolving technological landscape by embracing new tools while maintaining the value of human expertise in delivering quality service.

Talent development also emerged as a key priority for the tourism sector. As AI and digital tools increasingly shape the industry, there is a growing need for a workforce that is well-equipped with the skills to manage new technologies, customer service expectations, and sustainable practices. ASEAN countries are investing in training and education programs to develop a future-ready workforce. These programs aim to equip hospitality professionals with advanced skills in digital marketing, customer engagement, and sustainability, ensuring that the tourism industry is prepared for the changes ahead.

Randy Durband, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), spoke about how AI is transforming the way travel is marketed and planned. He noted that AI is helping to curate personalized travel experiences for consumers by aggregating and analyzing vast amounts of data to identify preferences and trends. However, he also pointed out that AI’s role in tourism is not to replace human workers, but rather to enhance efficiency and help workers focus on higher-level tasks, ultimately improving the quality of the visitor experience.

Finally, Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, emphasized the need for greater regional cooperation within ASEAN to strengthen the tourism sector. During his opening speech, he outlined the importance of aligning policies, investments in infrastructure, and joint marketing strategies across ASEAN nations. By working together, ASEAN countries can promote the region as a unified and seamless travel destination, ensuring greater connectivity and enhanced experiences for visitors. The concept of a regional tourism pass, which would allow travelers to visit multiple ASEAN countries without the hassle of dealing with separate visa requirements, was discussed as a way to further promote intra-regional travel.

Overall, ATF 2025 served as a vital platform for discussing the future of ASEAN tourism. With a focus on sustainability, digital transformation, and regional cooperation, the event provided valuable insights into how ASEAN countries can collaborate to create a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism ecosystem. As Malaysia works toward achieving its Visit Malaysia 2026 goals, and as ASEAN continues to strengthen its position as a top global tourism destination, the key takeaways from ATF 2025 underscore the importance of embracing innovation, sustainability, and unity in shaping the future of travel in the region.

Who Are the World’s Most Traveled People? - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, January 14, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / In November 2024, Bangkok, Thailand, hosted 250 of the world’s most traveled individuals at the Extraordinary Travel Festival—a landmark gathering for global explorers. This multi-day event featured 30 renowned speakers, vibrant networking opportunities, evening festivities, and exclusive trips. It was a celebration of discovery and connection, uniting the most passionate travelers on the planet.

We surveyed the participants and this is what we learned.  Attendees hailed from six continents, with 39% coming from North America, 35% from Europe, 16% from Asia, and the remainder from Oceania, South America, and Africa. Their living situations told a slightly different story: 38% reside in North America, 30% in Europe, 14% in Asia, and 11% are nomadic, without a permanent home. The rest are spread across Oceania, South America, and Africa.

The diversity of ages was another hallmark of the event. The youngest attendee was 22, while the oldest was 80, with an average age of 49. Age distribution showed 5% in their 20s, 21% in their 30s, 27% each in their 40s and 50s, 16% in their 60s, and 5% over 70. Gender representation was 62% male and 38% female, reflecting the broader travel community.

Unsurprisingly, these world travelers are constantly on the move, spending an average of 140 days a year traveling and taking 44 flights annually. Their dedication to exploration is unparalleled.

The festival made history by bringing together 31 individuals (the largest gathering) who have visited every country in the world—a remarkable achievement. Alain St.Ange Announces Forthcoming Release of His New Book https://www.zimbabwetourism.org/latest-travel-news/alain-st-ange-announces-forthcoming-release-of-his-new-book/3977/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 03:51:48 +0000 https://travelcommunication.net/global-travel-news/alain-st-ange-announces-forthcoming-release-of-his-new-book/

Alain St.Ange Announces Forthcoming Release of His New Book - TRAVELINDEXVictoria, Mahé, Seychelles, January 14, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / The well known Seychellois politician Alain St.Ange is set to release (towards the end of January) his latest work, ‘Alain St.Ange, My Journey – Life & Times in Politics’, a comprehensive 785-page book chronicling the political history of Seychelles. This groundbreaking publication highlights Alain St.Ange’s personal experiences, his family’s political legacy, and the evolution of Seychelles from colonial days to its establishment as a Republic in 1976.

The book promises to be an essential read for anyone interested in Seychelles’ rich political history. Digging deep into the past, St.Ange sheds light on the contributions of his family, from his father Karl St.Ange, to his grandparents, Kersley and Josephine St.Ange, during an era before modern political parties existed. Winding through pivotal decades, St.Ange recounts Seychelles’ transition from French dependency to British colony, and eventually to the Republic it is today.

The book showcase documents obtained from British archives on the island’s pre-independence era, the 1977 coup d’etat as well as the 1978 era of arrests and detentions.

Featuring a blend of historical facts and rare visuals – including archival photographs, campaign materials, and documents – this book provides an intimate look at Seychelles’ political landscape. Readers will uncover how political affiliations shaped the country’s destiny, leading to Constitutional Commission meetings in London and the emergence of key figures such as the Chief Minister, Prime Minister, and the establishment of a Coalition Government.

During his political career, Alain St.Ange participated in six elections, the pinnacle of which was his bid for the presidency in 2020. Reflecting on his time in public service, he shares, “I knew that my participation would, in one way or another, help democracy to establish its needed roots in Seychelles. People change, and political charters change. Following a party blindly simply for tradition is not the transformative leadership Seychelles needs.”

Alain St.Ange served in three consecutive cabinets under Presidents James Michel and Danny Faure, working closely with all five successive Seychellois Presidents in different capacities. His memoirs and analysis honour the privilege of public service and confirm his commitment to serving the people of Seychelles throughout his career. “At each of my swearing-in ceremonies as Minister, I reminded myself that a call for public service is a privilege, and that I should always remain true to the people I was being called to serve” he says in the book, as he documents his journey through his time as a candidate for four legislative elections and the 2020 presidential one.

This beautifully crafted landscape-format book features a hard cover and vivid full-colour pages, carefully designed to preserve the visual elements of historical and contemporary Seychellois politics. Black-and-white images from the French and British eras also pay homage to the country’s past.

With ‘Alain St.Ange, My Journey – Life & Times in Politics’, readers will gain an unfiltered perspective on the evolution of Seychelles’ governance, as well as a family legacy that intertwines with the country’s history.

Italian Shipyard Nerea Yacht Launches Day Cruiser at Thailand Boat Show https://www.zimbabwetourism.org/latest-travel-news/italian-shipyard-nerea-yacht-launches-day-cruiser-at-thailand-boat-show/3974/ Sun, 12 Jan 2025 12:52:26 +0000 https://travelcommunication.net/global-travel-news/italian-shipyard-nerea-yacht-launches-day-cruiser-at-thailand-boat-show/

Italian Shipyard Nerea Yacht Launches Day Cruiser at Thailand Boat Show - TRAVELINDEXPhuket, Thailand, January 10, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / NY24, an iconic design synonymous with Italian craftsmanship, to debut at the Thailand International Boat Show from January 9 to 12 at Phuket Yacht Haven Marina

Nerea Yacht, the Italian-based boutique nautical workshop founded by Dario Messina, known as The Tailor of the Sea for his unmatched attention to detail and personalized approach to yacht design, announces its debut at the Thailand International Boat Show.

From January 9 to 12, the event will host the Asia premiere of the NY24 Bit of Blue, the deluxe version of Nerea’s iconic NY24.

Every Nerea Yacht is a true epitome of luxury, crafted entirely by hand and in-house, with no production line. Under the direct supervision of Dario Messina, the yachts are meticulously crafted by a team of skilled artisans, ensuring unparalleled attention to detail. This bespoke approach allows Nerea Yacht to offer a level of customization that no other manufacturer can match, creating a truly unique vessel tailored to the discerning owner.

The NY24 Bit of Blue exemplifies Nerea’s commitment to luxury, with clean, timeless lines and refined details. Thanks to the careful selection of materials and innovative design, Nerea Yachts deliver high functionality and ease of use, while offering a level of exclusivity that reflects the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and individuality.

“We are excited to present our NY24 Deluxe model to the Asian audience, and we hope it generates the same enthusiasm it has in Italy and Europe, where it has seen recent sales and deliveries, including the NY24 in its LIMO version,” comments Dario Messina, Founder of Nerea Yacht. “Since its inception, Nerea Yacht has demonstrated bold commitment, investing in our facility near Fano in Italy’s Marche region, and in research, design, and development. This dedication is reflected in the boats we’ve recently delivered.” Messina adds: “We prioritize the use of cutting-edge, eco-sustainable materials and are actively testing the latest technologies to meet the needs of sea enthusiasts seeking a more conscious yachting experience, aligning with our artisanal approach.”

Designed by Italian designers Alessio Battistini and Davide Bernardini of studio ideaeITALIA, the NY24 range offers a blend of contemporary design, elegant finishes, and generous space to cater to sophisticated owners looking for a compact yet striking yacht.

The NY24 Bit of Blue boasts a palette of warm, elegant colors that harmonize with the natural teak deck. A refined pearl blue envelops the hull and superstructure, while the eco-leather outer cushions are finished in a distinct Terra di Siena hue. The same eco-friendly leather upholsters cabin elements, such as the sofa backrest and the ceiling’s central band, paired with a light, silky fabric chosen for the seat cushions. Interior finishes feature Oltremateria, an eco-friendly, fireproof, breathable oil-mortar that’s recyclable and free from toxic substances, aligning perfectly with Nerea Yacht’s craftsmanship values. With outstanding seaworthiness, the NY24 is a versatile luxury vessel. Its shallow draft allows access to secluded bays and inlets, while the standard inboard propulsion offers impressive performance with a top speed of 38 knots and a comfortable, economical cruising speed of 28 knots. Attention to detail extends to every element: the anchor, when not in use, is stowed within a fold-out nose shielded by stainless steel, and is electromechanically operated from the bridge. Notably, the NY24 is trailerable, enabling owners to transport their yacht for coastal or lakeside vacations without special permits.

The NY24 Bit of Blue also features advanced technology, with integrated home automation allowing all control systems to be managed from a touch display on the bridge, with commands accessible via tablet or smartphone—putting everything just a click away.

Supporting Nerea Yacht in promoting this new gem is MarineXplorer Co. Ltd., the ideal partner for effective dealership and representation in the region.

“I am thrilled to partner with Mr. Dario Messina and Nerea Yacht, a brand renowned for its innovative craftsmanship and Italian luxury,” said Mr. Chanyo Manakulsawasdi, MarineXplorer’s CEO & Founder.  “This collaboration marks an exciting milestone as Nerea Yacht makes its Thailand debut of NY24 Bit of Blue offering discerning yacht enthusiasts unparalleled design and performance. MarineXplorer is committed to bringing the essence of Italian elegance and sophistication to Thailand and the region, setting new standards of luxury boating experiences.”

ABOUT NY24 DELUXE “BIT OF BLUE”

The heart of the boat is the amidships living area, featuring a comfortable convertible dinette. The table can fold down to expand the relaxation area, increasing the sunbathing space already available aft. The cockpit can be equipped with two drawer fridges, a foldaway sink, and a hob, offering everything needed for total comfort and relaxation on board.

A spacious swim platform and the three-level transom design provide easy access in and out of the water, while an electrically-operated transom hatch simplifies engine inspection in the engine room. The entire deck, from the stern platform to the bow, as well as the steps leading to the cabin, are finished in high-quality teak, adding a touch of classic elegance to the boat’s contemporary style.

Sun protection is also thoughtfully designed: a retractable awning covers the entire living area during the hottest hours and, when not in use, stores neatly in a dedicated compartment. The carbon poles are conveniently housed in two deck pockets, easily accessible from the cockpit.

Thanks to careful design proportions, the NY24 boasts comfortable and well-utilized interior spaces for an almost 8-meter vessel, exceeding the typical spaciousness of competitors in this size range. Below deck, the NY24 offers a cozy cabin with a large sofa that converts into a double bed and includes a concealed toilet compartment, ensuring a comfortable stay on board both day and night. Additional comfort is provided by ample stowage, an audio-video system, and abundant natural light from two long side windows. A central tambour with two sliding smoked glass doors allows easy, comfortable access to the cabin.

The design process extended beyond aesthetics to include technical refinements: the ‘special V’ hull, with an 18.5° deadrise and lateral planing supports, provides excellent stability when moored or at anchor. The increased waterline surface area allows a smooth and fast entry into planing, a gentle transition over waves, and a secure ride, even in rough seas.
